Using Assistant

Assistant docks beside the Apple Notes window, so you can ask questions, organize material, or continue research without leaving the current note.

Before using it, connect at least one AI provider in Notomo → Settings → AI → Providers. Assistant has no default shortcut. You can add one under Settings → Shortcuts, or open it from the menu bar or Command Palette.

Start a conversation

  1. Open the target note in Apple Notes.
  2. Open Assistant.
  3. Select a model below the input field.
  4. Enter your question and review the context and attachments you added.
  5. Press the send shortcut shown in settings, or click the send button.

You can stop a response while it is being generated. When it finishes, you can copy it or retry. In long conversations, message navigation lets you quickly jump to the previous or next message.

Add note context

Section titled “Add note context”

Click the add button beside the input field and choose:

  • Current note: Add the full current note.
  • Selection or line: Add the selected text, or the current line if there is no selection.
  • Upload photo / Upload file: Choose an image or file from your Mac.

You can also drag images or files into the input field, or paste clipboard content directly. Context appears as tags. Before sending, you can inspect its source and scope or remove items individually.

Section titled “Use Web Search”

Web Search has three modes:

  • Off: Do not search the web.
  • Auto: Search only when the question requires current or external information.
  • Search: Explicitly search the web for this turn.

When supported, you can use the provider’s own Native Search. After configuring Brave Search or Jina Search, you can also select Extension Search. Extension Search builds its query only from the processed current question; it does not send note content or chat history as search queries.

Generate images

Section titled “Generate images”

With an image-capable ChatGPT or xAI Account model, describe the image in natural language. Once generated, you can preview, copy, save, or add it to Photos. See Generate images in Assistant for supported models and local cleanup behavior.

Use Skills

Section titled “Use Skills”

Add a Skill in the input field to apply reusable instructions saved in Apple Notes to the current request. You can remove the Skill tag before sending. See Skills to learn how to create and manage them.

Conversation history

Section titled “Conversation history”

Assistant stores conversations and related attachments locally:

  • Press ⌘N to start a new conversation.
  • Press ⌘Y to open chat history.
  • Search, continue, or delete conversations from history.
  • Under Settings → AI → Assistant, choose how many recent messages to remember.
  • Set automatic history cleanup to 7 days, 30 days, or never, or clear all history immediately.

Clearing chat history does not delete content from Apple Notes.
